What Is Weight Loss and Hormone Therapy?

Weight loss and hormone therapy refers to highly personalized treatments that work from within to facilitate easier weight loss and relief from symptoms associated with peptide deficiencies and/or hormone imbalance. Though there are a variety of factors that can cause hormonal fluctuations and decreased levels of peptides, the natural aging process is the most common reason for these changes in our internal systems.

Men and women are affected by changes in peptide and hormone levels as they age in different ways. However, the root cause is the same: as we get older, our bodies produce smaller amounts of peptides and of hormones like estrogen and testosterone.

Peptides are amino acid chains that are integral in initiating biological processes, such as those involved in regulating our metabolism and building muscle, among many others. When we lack an adequate supply of a particular peptide, we experience disruptions in the associated internal processes. Hormone peptide therapy focuses on increasing the number of specific peptides in the body.

Similarly, hormonal changes related to andropause in men and perimenopause and menopause in women often contribute to weight loss issues, along with many other adverse symptoms. Women are most affected by a drop in estrogen, while men are most affected by lower testosterone levels (Low T). Under proper medical supervision, hormone replacement therapy can bring estrogen and testosterone levels back to a more optimal level for dramatic improvements in the patient’s quality of life.

The Weight Loss and Hormone Therapy Consultation

At Natura Medspa, weight loss and hormone therapy first necessitates a consultation with Lisa Shaffer, ARNP. At this appointment, she will listen as you describe your difficulties with weight loss and any other concerns you may have.

Hormonal issues can cause both internal and external symptoms, so please mention anything you think of that can help us understand your condition. For instance, symptoms like an increased appetite and struggling to find the energy to exercise are just as important for your diagnosis as the visible changes you’ve noticed in your physique due to excess fat.

We will closely study your medical history and ask specific questions about your symptoms to narrow down which hormone (if any) and/or peptide(s) might be problematic. The effects of suboptimal peptide levels, low testosterone in men, and low estrogen in women are not limited to weight gain and include:

  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Poor sleep
  • Loss of energy
  • Lower sex drive
  • Slower injury healing times
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Menopausal and perimenopausal hot flashes and night sweats

Once all of your symptoms have been established, we can determine if peptide therapy, BHRT, or another treatment method is best for you. If you are a candidate for hormone therapy, we will need to order lab work to evaluate your hormone replacement or peptide therapy needs.

How to Prepare for Hormone Therapy

You will be given instructions on proper diet and exercise, which you should ideally begin following immediately after your consultation. Hormone therapy (or any medical procedure) is not intended to be a standalone weight loss solution. Instead, this type of treatment works to provide your body with the components it needs to support your diet and exercise-based weight management efforts.

If your hormone therapy treatment plan involves injections or an incision, you may be asked to do one or more of the following before your session:

  • Abstain from blood thinners and anti-inflammatories for 7-10 days, as they can complicate the skin’s healing process.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least three days.
  • Ensure that you stay hydrated to promote fluid movement throughout the body.
  • Eat a nutritious meal before your session.
  • Inform us if you have developed an infection or feel otherwise unwell on the day of your session, please let us know before coming in.

What Is the Recovery Process Like for Hormone Therapy?

No particular recovery period is typically necessary for hormone therapy, so you can head back to your normal daily routine right after your session. If your procedure was performed with a small incision or injections, you might have some mild soreness in that location for a couple of days.

When Can I Expect to See Weight Loss Results?

Your result timetable will greatly depend on your specific symptoms and unique response to treatment. Most patients report noticeable changes in their appetite and weight loss progress four weeks after their initial treatment, but it can take up to six months to completely restore and rebalance your hormones. You will need to schedule follow-up appointments to ensure consistent effects.

Can I Combine Hormone Therapy with Other Treatments?

Yes, Natura Medspa offers many cosmetic treatments that can complement the effects of BHRT and peptide therapy. Just some of the many treatment options we have available to ensure we address all of your aesthetic goals include:

  • CoolSculpting®: CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that freezes and destroys fat cells, which are then eliminated from the body via the lymphatic system. CoolSculpting® can be used to target particularly stubborn fat deposits in the thighs, upper arms, flanks, back, under the buttocks, and under the chin.
  • RF microneedling: Stretch marks and early signs of skin laxity can be treated with this technique that stimulates the body’s repair and renewal processes and production of collagen to smooth and firm the skin.
  • Injectable fillers: Losing unwanted volume in your abdomen is great, but lost volume in other areas, such as the cheeks or buttocks, may not have a positive effect on your appearance. Injectable fillers can be used to replace lost volume and refine facial and body contours.
  • Botox®: A youthful facial appearance is the perfect complement to a slimmer figure. Botox® can smooth away creases, furrows, and fine lines to rejuvenate your look.
  • Chemical peels: Chemical peels provide skin rejuvenation and can reduce the appearance of facial lines, hyperpigmentation, and other complexion concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does a Hormone Peptide Therapy Treatment Involve?
There are multiple delivery methods for peptide therapy, depending on your exact concerns and other patient-specific factors. It’s possible you might be able to simply take an oral medication or use a nasal spray at home. Peptides can also be provided transdermally with a patch or topical cream. Alternatively, subcutaneous peptide injections may be recommended.
What Happens During a BHRT Session?
Pellecome™ BHRT requires periodic visits to our medspa, so bioidentical hormone pellets can be inserted under the skin. After numbing a small section of the hip, a tiny incision is made. Then we will use the Pellecome™ device to insert the pellets themselves, each of which is about the size of a grain of rice. Over time, the bioidentical hormone is released into the body.
Does Hormone Therapy Hurt?
There is minimal-to-no discomfort associated with hormone therapy treatments. If you are receiving injectable peptides, you will likely just feel a slight pinch during each injection. To ensure your comfort during BHRT, the incision location is numbed. Mild soreness after injections or incisions is to be expected, but it should subside within two or three days.
How Does Peptide Therapy Work?
Peptides are chains of amino acids that direct various bodily functions. As we age, the number of peptides produced by the body decreases, and we start to see and feel the impact of dysfunction within our internal systems in a variety of ways, such as an inability to lose fat or gain muscle. In a clinical setting, we can mitigate the effects of declining peptide production by introducing more peptides to restore optimal levels.
How Do Bioidentical Hormone Pellets Work?
The goal of BHRT is to treat the lack of a hormone, not a lack of peptides. To do so, we need to add bioidentical testosterone or estrogen into the endocrine system to reestablish balanced hormone levels. Hormone therapy pellets inserted under the skin release a low and steady dose of testosterone or estrogen that the body can use exactly as it is uses the hormones it produces naturally.
Am I a Good Candidate for Hormone Therapy for Weight Loss?
If you are no longer able to achieve and maintain a healthy weight with traditional weight management techniques, like dieting and exercising regularly, you may be a good candidate for hormone peptide therapy or bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. One of the best things about hormone treatments is that they can help get to the root of the problem, whether that is excess fat not responding to a strict diet, an inability to build muscle, or not having the energy to work out.

No treatment is for everyone. If you have a blood clotting disorder, heart or cardiovascular disease, or a history of heart attack or stroke, we may recommend an alternative treatment.

What Other Symptoms Can Be Treated with Hormone Therapy?
In addition to weight loss, peptide therapy and BHRT can be an effective treatment option for patients concerned about:

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Down or depressed mood
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Bone density loss
  • Visible signs of aging
  • Decline in short term memory
  • Hot flashes and/or night sweats
  • Diminished sexual libido, function, and satisfaction
  • Lack of energy
How Is My Hormone Dosage Selected?
Contrary to what you might think, we do not simply calculate your hormone dosage based on your current testosterone and/or estrogen levels. Hormone levels fluctuate day to day, particularly in the salivary glands.
To gauge the amount of peptide or bioidentical hormone needed, your blood, urine, or saliva will be tested more than once to obtain a bigger picture of your endocrine system’s health. That way, we can come up with the correct dosage.

These tests may also continue after your sessions begin to ensure your results are progressing smoothly and your overall health stays at 100 percent. Your hormone levels will be monitored very closely, and your dosage can be adjusted as necessary as your treatment continues. Since the body can become accustomed to hormone therapy assistance over time, we may need to gradually increase your dosage during follow-up sessions.

When Should I Start Hormone Therapy?
While there is a general timeframe associated with age-related declines in peptides and hormone levels for men and women, there is no absolute right or wrong age for a patient to begin treatment. Everyone ages differently, so symptom onset and severity typically determine when a patient should start hormone therapy.

We frequently recommend BHRT with estrogen for women within ten years of perimenopause and menopause, as symptoms of low estrogen begin to develop at this stage in a woman’s life. We can administer BHRT with estrogen to eligible patients to restart their weight loss journey, as well as to rejuvenate their skin and help them feel younger and more feminine.

Most men treated with testosterone replacement therapy for weight loss and other symptoms are typically over the age of 40. However, a smaller number of men can experience Low T symptoms in their 30s and may benefit from hormone therapy at that time.

How Much Does Weight Loss and Hormone Therapy Cost?
Weight loss and hormone therapy are highly individualized treatments. Every patient receives a carefully calibrated dosage, which affects the total price. The cost also varies based on the therapeutic delivery method, the extent of your symptoms, and the number of sessions required.

If you choose to combine semaglutide, peptide therapy, or bioidentical hormone therapy with CoolSculpting® or another aesthetic procedure, additional costs will apply. During your complimentary consultation, we can work together to come up with the most helpful treatment plan possible that fits within your budget.
Due to the transformative health and wellness benefits of weight loss and hormone therapy, our patients find that BHRT and peptide therapy are well worth the investment. Patients often report losing weight much easier than before treatment and often feel younger, too!
